Greater Houston Partnership talks Houston economic recovery

Greater Houston Partnership talks Houston economic recovery

An executive from the Greater Houston Partnership spoke with Houston Northwest Chamber of Commerce members about the struggle for economic recovery, with forces pulling the economy both in and out of the recession.

Patrick Jankowski, senior vice president of the group, said Thursday the struggle was like a tug of war, with some factors pulling Houston’s economy into recovery, and others keeping the economy from progressing and bringing back jobs.

Some positives include consumer sentiment at its highest level since March; single-family home sales and car sales are back up, according to data from the US Census Bureau and the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. Jankowski said an increase in automobile sales was a short-term indicator of consumer confidence, while home sales were a long-term indicator of consumer confidence.

Jankowski also said retail sales overall have risen since the pandemic first hit in March and April, according to census data, like how sales go up around hurricane season.

“Think back about after Harvey hit the region and how regional sales surged because people were having to replace everything that was lost,” Jankowski said. “People weren’t able to shop early on in the pandemic, so now you’re starting to see this increase in retail sales.”

There are still some factors holding back economic recovery, he said, including the still present risk of COVID-119, turmoil in the stock market, high unemployment claims and the lack of a new economic stimulus package.

At the worst part of the great recession in 2009, there were about 600,000 unemployment claims weekly, he said, while the highest the U.S. has seen during the pandemic was 7 million weekly, but that

GameStop on Thursday announced a multiyear partnership with Microsoft to upgrade its stores and offer a new Xbox console package for no up-front cost — sending its shares rocketing by 44%.

As part of the partnership, the world’s biggest video games retailer said it would offer buyers an “Xbox All Access” bundle, for zero upfront cost, that includes an Xbox console and a two-year digital subscription to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Microsoft’s “Netflix of gaming” subscription service.

Microsoft did not name a specific Xbox console that would be part of the bundle in a statement, but said that it was “excited about continuing and evolving [the] relationship for the launch of the Xbox Series” consoles, due November 10.

GameStop will also upgrade its e-commerce site as part of the agreement.

It will integrate Microsoft’s cloud software and hardware into its stores to create what it calls the “ultimate gaming destination” for gamers. GameStop has more than 5,000 stores in 10 countries. It didn’t say how many of these stores would be upgraded.

GameStop will use Dynamics 365, Microsoft’s suite of cloud-based business applications, to standardize its back-end and in-store operations including finance, inventory, e-commerce, retail, and point of sale.

Staff would be able to access insights spanning both e-commerce and in-store sales data, Microsoft said. This includes customer purchasing history, real-time data on product

UK and Ukraine sign Political, Free Trade and Strategic Partnership Agreement

UK and Ukraine sign Political, Free Trade and Strategic Partnership Agreement

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson today signed an agreement with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine to strengthen the political and trade ties between the two countries.

Boris Johnson and Volodymyr Zelenskyy have signed the ‘Political, Free Trade and Strategic Partnership Agreement’ to strengthen UK cooperation in political, security and foreign matters with Ukraine, while also securing continued preferential trade for businesses and consumers.

This agreement, when brought into force, will allow businesses to continue trading as they do now after the end of the Transition Period. It delivers the same level of liberalisation in trade, services and public procurement that businesses currently enjoy under the existing EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.

And it underlines the UK’s support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as both countries’ commitment to strengthening democracy and human rights and deepening the security relationship.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said:

The UK is Ukraine’s most fervent supporter. Whether it’s our defence support, stabilisation efforts, humanitarian assistance or close cooperation on political issues, our message is clear: we are utterly committed to upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.

The Strategic Partnership Agreement we signed today signals the next chapter in our relationship. It’s a chapter that will bring increased security and prosperity for both the people of the UK and Ukraine.

Trade between the UK and Ukraine was worth £1.5 billion in 2019. Top UK goods exports to Ukraine were aircraft (£79m), medicinal and pharmaceutical products (£61m) and cars (£52m). The UK imported £177 million of cereals and £182 million of iron and steel in 2019.

International Trade Secretary, Liz Truss, said:

Free trade is an incredibly powerful agent of economic growth, opportunity and human progress. This agreement enables our two countries to continue working closely together, both on a political level and in the
