Apple unveils four new iPhone 12 models with 5G: CNBC After Hours

CNBC.com’s MacKenzie Sigalos brings you the day’s top business news headlines. On today’s show, CNBC.com Apple reporter Kif Leswing breaks down the tech giant’s big iPhone 12 reveal, including the implications for the 5G network. Plus, CNBC.com’s Melissa Repko dives into Amazon’s Prime Day event this year, and explains how competitors like Target and Walmart are better positioned than ever to eat (some of) Amazon’s lunch.

Here’s everything Apple just announced at its iPhone 12 event

Apple just wrapped up its big iPhone 12 event, where it announced four new iPhone 12 models, all of which support new faster 5G networks.

It also announced a new smart home speaker, called the HomePod Mini, and some fun accessories for the new iPhones that use magnets to attach to them.

Big-box retailers like Walmart, Target try to beat Amazon on speed by focusing on curbside pickup

As big-box retailers throw their own sales events during Amazon Prime Day, expect to see them tout an asset that the e-commerce giant doesn’t have: numerous stores across the country where customers can quickly retrieve their online purchases.

Buy online, pick up in store options — such as curbside and in-store pickup — have gained popularity during the coronavirus pandemic as a safe, convenient alternative to browsing store aisles.

Apple announces MagSafe wireless charging for iPhone 12

Apple announces MagSafe wireless charging for iPhone 12

  • Apple revealed the brand new iPhone 12 on Tuesday afternoon during its annual iPhone event.
  • Alongside the new phone, Apple announced a new $40 wireless charging mat named MagSafe — a nod to the beloved charging port that appeared on Apple laptops for years.
  • The new charger is Apple’s second attempt to break into wireless charging. The company previously revealed — and almost launched — a product named “AirPower” that was eventually cancelled in a rare move from Apple.

Apple is making a second attempt at wireless charging with a new product named MagSafe — a nod to the beloved charging port that was part of every Apple laptop for years.

The new $40 device enables Apple’s latest iPhone, the iPhone 12, to wireless charge. The phone magnetically snaps onto the charger, and Apple has a variety of new accessories to go alongside the new device — from cases to stands, both made by Apple and from third-parties like Belkin.

In addition to the MagSafe charger, Apple also introduced the MagSafe Duo. Instead of charging just an iPhone, the charger can be opened to charge two devices at once.

Here’s what that looks like in action:

Notably, the MagSafe wireless chargers aren’t Apple’s first attempt to break into wireless charging.

Back in 2017, Apple announced a device named AirPower that was intended to serve the same purpose. But two years later, despite the product being announced and its name even appearing on related products, Apple killed the device in a rare move for the smartphone giant.

“After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch,” Apple’s senior vice president of hardware

Apple iPhone 12 colors and HomePod leak ahead of event

Apple iPhone 12 colors and HomePod leak ahead of event

  • Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 12 lineup and a new HomePod speaker at its event on Tuesday.
  • But hours before the event, the leaker Evan Blass published what he said were images of the new iPhones and HomePod.
  • The images line up with previous leaks about the color choices for the iPhone 12.
  • Visit Business Insider’s homepage for more stories.

Apple is expected to unveil its iPhone 12 lineup at an event on Tuesday, but the device’s design and color options may have leaked just hours before the official debut.

Evan Blass, who has a track record of publishing accurate leaks about unreleased tech gadgets, posted photos of what he said were the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, and a new HomePod mini speaker.

The images line up with previous leaks about the phones, such as that the iPhone 12 will have a dual camera setup while the iPhone 12 Pro will have a triple-lens camera like the iPhone 11 Pro.

According to Blass, the iPhone 12 will come in black, blue, green, red, and white, while the iPhone 12 Pro will come in blue, gold, graphite, and silver. That lines up with details recently published by a leaker known as Kang.

Blass also posted images of what appears to be a shorter, rounder HomePod smart speaker in space-gray and white color options.

Bloomberg previously reported that Apple was working on a smaller and cheaper version of the HomePod.

Apple did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.

Blass has previously published accurate leaks about tech products before they officially launched. For example, he recently published renders of Samsung’s Galaxy S20 Fan Edition before it debuted.

Apple Reveals Four iPhone 12 Models, Heralding ‘New Era’ for 5G Technology

Apple Reveals Four iPhone 12 Models, Heralding ‘New Era’ for 5G Technology

Apple Inc.

AAPL -2.65%

unveiled a new iPhone Tuesday capable of connecting to a much faster 5G cellular network, which investors are betting will spur strong demand.

Chief Executive Tim Cook stood at the company’s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters to begin the webcast, streamed on Apple’s website—a visual reminder of how the tech giant’s latest flagship-product introduction differs from previous ones because of the coronavirus pandemic, which closed businesses and left people sheltering at home around the world for much of this year.

The iPhone 12 offered a new physical appearance from last year’s smartphone, moving from a rounded design to a flatter-edged look reminiscent of the iPhone 4. Apple revealed four versions of the phones ranging in sizes and starting in price from $699 for the iPhone 12 Mini with a 5.4-inch display. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has a 6.7-inch display, an increase from 6.5 inches; the higher-end versions emphasize the camera abilities.

The newest iPhone designs move away from the rounded shape of recent models toward a flatter-edged look akin to the iPhone 4. The iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, unveiled Tuesday.

The greatest hype going into the event, however, has been about the device’s 5G capability. Apple’s adoption of the next-generation wireless standard places intense focus on the new technology that has been years in the making. Cellular network carriers have been scrambling to roll out 5G service across the U.S., but coverage remains spotty in the country and it isn’t clear yet whether customers will want it.

“Today is the beginning of a new era for iPhone,” Mr. Cook said.

Shares slipped as the event took place, which has occurred with previous Apple events, before rebounding. With few people familiar with the new cellular service, Mr. Cook made an effort to describe why

The iPhone 12 is the successor to last year’s iPhone 11. Like the iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 has a dual camera and comes in an array of colors: This year’s lineup includes black, white, red, green, and blue.

But the new device differs from than last year’s model in a few key ways. While the iPhone 11 had the rounded design Apple has employed since the iPhone 6, the iPhone 12 has a sharper edge similar to older iPhones like the iPhone 4 and the new iPad Pro. Apple says the iPhone 12 is 11% thinner and 16% lighter than the iPhone 11.

Unlike the iPhone 11, the new device will also be 5G enabled and will have a 6.1-inch OLED display (last year’s model had Apple’s liquid retina display). Apple says the iPhone 12 has four times better drop performance thanks to a new step in the glass-making process called ceramic shield.

The iPhone 12 will run on Apple’s new A14 Bionic chip, which Apple says will provide increased performance with better energy efficiency.

While last year’s version had wireless charging, Apple added a new way to make wireless charging easier with the iPhone 12: the phone will have MagSafe built in, meaning that any MagSafe accessory will automatically snap to the back of the device which should make it easier to wirelessly charge.

The iPhone 12 will start at $799. It will be available to preorder on October 16 and will ship on October 23.
