Making new friends during a pandemic can be almost impossible for kids. But school staff are finding creative ways to help. – News –

It was a tough day for a 6-year-old. And her mom. Imagine being a first grader in a new school and unable to participate in “Best Friends” day.

Nikki Bourgeois went on Facebook not to complain but to share what it was like for her daughter Mackenna, a brand new Somerset, trying to make friends in remote-learning mode.

“Makenna didn’t have anyone that she could talk about. It was a bit heartbreaking,” Nikki wrote in the post on Oct. 2. “We don’t know anyone in the area, and without her being physically in school, she isn’t able to meet any friends. We have been told that there are kids in the neighborhood that are her age, but we have yet to meet anyone. COVID-19 didn’t help either.”

The social and psychological needs for some students have become a challenge to meet in this COVID-fear-wracked world. Making friendships online doesn’t compare to old-school in-school, face-to-face socializing. And even in the on-site half of hybrid learning, masks and social distancing can reduce the ability of an elementary school age child to make friends, something that is critical for the pre-K through grade 5 set.

Schools and teachers know better than most about this 2020 challenge. And they’re taking action.

Susan Darmody of Westport is a second-grade teacher at the Silvia Elementary School on Meridian Street in Fall River. She’s starting this school year teaching in full remote. Silvia has a mix of remote and hybrid students.

“Tougher for the remote kids,” Darmody said in a text message to The Herald News. “Hybrid kids do a lot of activities with their teachers using social distance in the classroom. Games and outside doing mask breaks. But (the children) are so happy to be in school.

“A few ways we help make the kids feel

New Covid-19 infections are rising as the weather turns colder—and the stock market is paying attention.

U.S. coronavirus cases reported Tuesday hit more than 46,000, up about 21% from a week ago, while the seven-day average of new infections, which has been rising steadily since the beginning of October, sits at roughly 51,000, up almost 17% from a week ago.

To this point, more than 7.8 million Americans have become infected with Covid-19. About 3.1 million have recovered. Tragically, more than 207,000 have died. America has roughly 4.5 million active cases.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, warned Americans about increasing infection rates in the fall, but believes the U.S. can halt the progression. In recent months, he has consistently advocated for wearing a mask, avoiding crowds, staying outside, washing hands and maintaining six feet of social distancing where possible.

The market, however, appears to be betting on vaccines and treatments. On Tuesday, for instance, the

That’s not a huge drop, which suggests that confidence remains high that Covid will be conquered.

Still, it never hurts to wear a mask.

The Mad Makery is opening a brand new space Tuesday on Monroe Street after operating largely online only since launching in 2018.

Owner Melanie Gehrke started by creating craft kits only available online. All of the items needed to complete a project were included in a kit. She has also hosted workshops at various local businesses prior to the pandemic.

Before the pandemic began, Gehrke had announced plans to open a retail location on Junction Road, but with the uncertainty of COVID-19, she decided to no longer open the larger space.

She’s now set to open a new retail space at 2528 Monroe Street, where she will offer private art lessons for children, DIY kits and small group workshops for adults.

Gehrke is a former elementary school art teacher, so will customize and create classes for children interested in learning a skill.

The Mad Makery is requiring everyone to wear masks in the studio. Tables, chairs and tools will be sanitized after all customers. They will also have contactless temperature checks and a COVID-19 screening questionnaire.

As employees sign up for job-based coverage for 2021, they’ll find the coronavirus pandemic has changed some of the benefits that their companies are providing, experts said.

And they’ll also see their premiums and out-of-pocket costs increase about 5%, which is more than wages and inflation have been rising, according to the Business Group on Health, which surveys large employers.

This bump comes on top of a 4% increase in premiums this year, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation’s annual employer health benefits survey. In 2020, the average annual premiums hit nearly $7,500 for single coverage and $21,500 for family coverage. Deductibles stayed roughly the same at about $1,650 for a single person.

One of the biggest changes for 2021 will be a growth in the number and types of virtual care options, said Steve Wojcik, the group’s vice president of public policy. Employers had long offered telehealth, but few of their staffers actually used it.

The pandemic changed all that. Utilization soared as Americans sought medical care from the safety of their homes.

Some 53% of large employers will offer more virtual care options next year, the group found. And they are extending the services to weight management, prenatal care and management of chronic diseases, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Coronavirus, as well as the accompanying economic upheaval, has also greatly affected many Americans’ mental health. Companies plan to bolster their support and make employees more aware of the offerings available to them, said Mark Hope, senior director at Willis Towers Watson.

Some 45% of large employers are planning to work with their insurers to expand mental health provider networks, according to the Business Group on Health report.
