In late August, a forest fire, set by lightning and emboldened by climate change, whipped across the Santa Cruz Mountains in California, ultimately burning more than 85,000 acres. 

Diego Saez Gil’s home was among its victims. 

Ironically, it was in that home that Saez Gil dreamt up the idea for his startup, Pachama. Founded in 2018, the company aims to fight climate change — which makes wildfires more common and severe — by protecting forests.

“It is meaningful that now my house is taken by the consequences of climate change, and that those forests will need restoring soon,” Saez Gil, the company’s cofounder, wrote on Medium the day after his home was destroyed. “You can’t make our mission more personal to me now.”

Saez Gil’s startup is a tech company, but it’s not your typical Silicon Valley startup.

Pachama sells carbon credits, which represent the carbon dioxide that trees remove from the air. Forests that are protected or restored can generate credits, and companies can buy them to offset their own emissions.

The idea is that, in doing so, businesses can help curb deforestation while reducing their overall climate footprint. 

Though Pachama is just a few years old, it’s won backing from major investors including Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Amazon, and tennis

When Sameer Mehta and Aman Gupta launched boAt in 2016, the goal was to avoid another me-too sourced from China product “without having a clear vision on the design and Intellectual Property”.

Today, boAt is present in 5,000 retail stores, supported by 20 distributors. The startup claims to be clocking sales of over 10,000 units a day, and four million units per year, and says it has served 20 million Indians so far.

In FY 2020, it clocked a revenue of Rs 500 crore, up by 108.8 percent from Rs 239.44 crore in FY 2019, while the business has been profitable for five years straight.

Behind boAt’s growth is a consumer-first approach, which has made the startup one of the most sought-after youth brands in India. Almost 80 percent of its sales coming from ecommerce channels such as Amazon and Flipkart.

By paying heed to millions of customers’ reviews online, boAt was able to learn what other brands did not want to learn —that Indians loved a product that can be part of their lifestyle.

“Our hypothesis was to listen to the consumer and to address their needs. In the D2C world, the consumer’s feedback is instant and that is what we listen to build our brand,” Aman tells YourStory.

Using electric planes and UAVs, this startup wants to redefine urban mobility in India

Increasing population, encroachments, traffic problems, and infrastructure problems are major concerns for Indian roadways. In a bid to solve issues related to inadequate road infrastructure, Chennai-based The ePlane Company is looking to take the aerial route.

Ubifly Technologies Private Limited, better known as The ePlane Company (TEC), was founded in 2016 by Pranjal Mehta and Satyanarayanan Chakravarthy to provide aerial delivery services. The startup ideated out from the National Centre for Combustion Research & Development Lab (NCCRD).

Speaking with YourStory, Satyanarayanan, Co-founder and CTO, explains that the startup is building electric planes and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for short-range intracity travels and is aimed at redefining urban mobility.

He adds that the products developed by the startup are unique in nature because they are a hybrid mix of drone and electric aeroplane technology.

Satyanarayanan has been teaching Aerospace Engineering at IIT Madras since 1998. He is also the head of the National Centre for Combustion Research & Development Lab (NCCRD) and the Centre of Propulsion Technology at IIT Madras.

His study on propulsion was one of the reasons that led to the launch of TEC. On the other hand, Pranjal, an alumnus of IIT Madras, was previously involved in building short distance daily flying vehicles.

“Electric cars are now more expensive than traditional combustive vehicles and the major reason for this is the cost of the battery. Users expect similar mileage from both the vehicles and thus, EV cars need to pack up batteries to match the mileage of an ICE car, thereby increasing the cost of the vehicles.
