Teachers get creative to keep students engaged during online learning

COLORADO SPRINGS — During this time of online learning, local school districts are raising concerns over student engagement. Some say students are disappearing during class time, not turning in assignments, and have a lack of participation.

“We’re seeing some students not log into their class, maybe not turning in their assignment, forgetting their assignment or they weren’t aware of it,” said Dr. Wendy Birhanzel, superintendent of Harrison School District 2.

Birhanzel says it’s been a struggle to keep their online learners engaged in the classroom. She says it’s important for students to stay engaged to prevent learning gaps and foster growth.

“As research will tell us, their academic achievement will increase, their self-esteem will increase, the likelihood of going to college and getting a job after high school will increase,” said Birhanzel.

Parents should monitor their children online to make sure they’re paying attention and participating in class.

“Children are pretty savvy and sometimes parents think they’re online but they’re playing a game or doing something other than their assignment,” said Birhanzel.

Angelica Marquez with Falcon School District 49 says they’ve also been having problems with student engagement.

“Kids are being left by themselves at home or left in front of the computer by themselves while mom or dad is trying to multitask,” said Marquez.

She recommends parents set expectations for themselves and children.

“Parents go off of expectations for teachers, but I think since they’re being held responsible for what’s going on at home, there needs to be an expectation coming from their point of view as well,” said Marquez.

Both school districts are coming up with creative ways to keep their students engaged.

“We have teachers checking in on them, we are starting some peer groups where they can meet together and socialize,” said Marquez.

UC Berkeley professor strives to engage students through creative lectures

When UC Berkeley announced that the fall semester would be virtual, campus computer science professor Dan Garcia transformed his “man cave” basement into a studio in order to make engaging prerecorded video lectures for his students.

According to campus sophomore Kyle Yu, Garcia — who is teaching Computer Science 61C, “Great Ideas in Computer Architecture” and Computer Science 10, “The Beauty and Joy of Computing” this semester — has always been known as a funny and creative professor. During his lecture videos this semester, Garcia has performed an impression of “The Godfather” while petting a Pusheen stuffed toy, and he has also incorporated juggling into his lessons, according to campus sophomore Boyang Li.

Yu added that Garcia’s enthusiasm and love for teaching motivate him to want to learn more.

“They are a lot of fun. Typically what you learn in (computer science) is ‘teach me the concepts’ and that’s it, but when I am watching it, I actually laugh,” Yu said. “It makes me look forward to watching the lectures and learning from them.”

In August, Garcia received a grant from the College of Engineering that included one month of summer salary to cover some of the time he spent on creating the videos.

Garcia said he has equipped his studio with a previously purchased green screen, 4K camera, lights and microphone.

Additionally, Garcia said that when he first set up his studio, he spent days adjusting the lights and optimizing the acoustics with sound baffles, which are designed to absorb sound to prevent echoes. He added that he spends about six to 12 hours making each video.

“You can tell when people are excited by them. I also love the material, and I think that comes across,” Garcia said. “I really appreciate and enjoy sharing the enthusiasm with my

Adjusting the toolbox: Vocational schools craft creative ways to keep students engaged during pandemic

Adjusting the toolbox: Vocational schools craft creative ways to keep students engaged during pandemic

“Career and technical education is by its very nature hands-on,” said Edward Bouquillon, superintendent of Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical High School, located on the Lexington/Lincoln line. “So we have to have kids in their shop or laboratory environment.”

Recognizing the importance of in-person instruction, many of the state’s regional vocational schools have found ways to offer students at least some in-school time for their shop programs, and in some cases for academic classes. The situation is in contrast to last spring, where the pandemic forced vocational and all other schools to switch entirely to at-home remote learning.

Massachusetts has 26 regional vocational schools. Vocational programs also are offered at about 30 comprehensive high schools.

At Blue Hills, officials have devised a schedule for prioritizing in-school learning for its shop courses, which — as is typical with vocational schools — are held in alternating weeks with academic classes. Students this fall have two in-school days every shop week. Their other vocational classes and all academic classes are taken virtually at home.

Officials said the plan provides students in all four grades some in-person vocational instruction while also enabling the school to operate at 25 percent enrollment capacity — one quarter of the student body attending in person on any one school day —which is necessary to meet social distancing guidelines.

“Students really need the hands-on experience,” said Blue Hills Superintendent Jill Rossetti. “How could you hire someone who has never changed a tire but only read about it? How do you hire someone to use an acetylene torch who has only watched it demonstrated online?”

To make the plan work, the school is following such safety procedures as requiring students to wear masks, remain 6 feet
